NAHB Designation Courses

Residential Construction for Superintendents Designation (RCS)
NAHB Designation Programs aim to bridge the critical skills gap that exists within the residential construction industry. BAWN's affiliation with NAHB makes it possible to bring these valuable programs to our Membership. The goal of this programming is to help shape a workforce that is skilled, knowledgeable and able to meet the needs of the ever changing Construction Industry for BAWN Members today and well into the future. These classes, each one a four-hour module, are held at the Reynolds Building at Western Nevada College in Carson City.

The Residential Construction for Superintendents Designation series is geared toward budding field superintendents and can benefit current site personnel wishing to excel in this position. The designation's eight courses cover issues and subjects identified by National Association of Homebuilder members as critical to a field supervisory job. The Advanced RCS or ARCS series has just been developed and completed and some of those courses will be offered in the future, as well. Those classes include four offerings in each of three "tracks", including professional growth, building leaders and technical proficiency. The successful completion of eight courses of the 12 offered - two in each of the three tracks plus any two others from any of the three tracks - results in the ARCS designation and puts the building professional in elite company.

The Curriculum
HBIs' Residential Construction for Superintendents (RCS) Designation covers the following core competencies:

  • General Project Management
  • Budget Management and Cost Control
  • Office and Subcontractor Relations
  • Customer Service & Homeowner Relations
  • Planning and Scheduling
  • Safety and Security
  • Codes and Quality Control
  • Hiring, Training and Supervision

The Residential Construction for Superintendents designation courses have been developed in four-hour modules to allow for maximum flexibility to HBA's administering the designation to candidates enrolled in the program. A designation of Residential Construction for Superintendents (RCS) will be issued to candidates who have successfully completed the full set of eight courses.

NAHB Concrete Specialization Courses

"Concrete Mix Designs, Construction Guidelines and Troubleshooting"
Each year, residential construction supervisors oversee the installation of approximately six billion square feet of concrete flatwork and walls in the form of driveways, walkways, patios, floor slabs and basement as well as above-grade walls. On the typical single-family home, builders spend an estimated $6,000 for these, including labor and materials. This is a half-day (four hours, or four credits) and HBI's Residential Construction Academy will provide certificates of completion for each four-hour (four credits) course taken.

"Handling Moisture Behind Brick Veneers to Back-up Walls"
Each year, hundreds of thousands of homes are sided wholly or partly with veneers of brick, architectural block or cast stone. Builders paid over six billion dollars for the labor and materials to create these veneers. Properly constructed, masonry veneers effectively prevent water damage, elevated indoor humidity levels, mold and mildew. This is a half-day course (four hours, or four credits) and HBI's Residential Construction Academy will provide certificates of completion for each four-hour (four credits) course taken.

      NCVER

      NCVER

Nevada Center for Vocational Education & Research

BAWN and the Nevada Center for Vocational Education and Research (NCVER) have teamed together to expand the pool of workers available for the construction industry. The model they are using is a "Learn While You Earn". Students are paid for time spent in the field working while they are learning the skills they need to become part of the construction industry.

The partnership between BAWN and NCVER will train individuals to become qualified construction workers and will provide jobs for those individuals in the industry. The training consists of a hands-on, skilled trades vocational education program. The program offers effective safety training and basic skill training to individuals over 18 who have little or no experience in construction. NCVER, as a satellite center for the University of Nevada Building Maintenance and Repair Program and an off-campus training site for Western Nevada College (WNC), will provide the training. BAWN, through its membership, will provide the jobs.

For further information about this effort to bring people to the construction industry contact Monda Griffin at the NCVER at 265-2818 or jackbuilt1@verizon.net. Anyone interested in participating in the event should sign up at a local Job Connect office.
